Umoja Wellness is developing as a community hub, wellness sanctuary, and regenerative marketplace, Umoja Wellness Market (Soko Mshindi)

From wellness services to wellness practices, one of our most essential socioeconomic priorities is to have an accessible lifestyle marketplace of hand-selected toxin-free products that support our optimal wellness, peace of mind, and authentic joy while we transform our homes, lives and communities into toxin-free sancutaries.

Though there is a range of organic products in Tanzania, there is not a particularly wide range or variety that can be easily found in one place (what you need is often found via networking and who you know). Likewise, in a remote location that is opening up via government road systems, Ushongo Village is very void of business activities, vocational opportunities, and accessibility to products on the market. The great thing about a marketplace is that not only does it provide accessibility to goods (that serve the greater good), but it also employs and empowers many different kinds of people with varied interests. This is where it all comes together — where community members empower themselves with conscious consumerism and follow their passions in increasingly varied vocational outlets — once again, puzzle pieces of a larger whole.

This will eventually require a needed vocational school with visiting and permanent teachers from in-country and beyond that can refine local leaders and help spread their knowledge to more than one or two people in the village.

Some initial products (complimenting an emergent Farmer’s Market via Umoja Farming) could include:

  • Coconut Oil from Ushongo Beach (full of coconuts)

  • Coconut Milk (bottled locally, powdered locally & nationally)

  • Seaweed and Sea Moss Powders, Gels, Oils, Soaps & Beyond

  • Local Loofahs for self-care scrubbing and house-hold sponges

  • Local Butter and Ghee to replace unhealthy fake butter on the market (the Coconut Oil will also be replacing unhealthy seeds oils imported locally, ie. Sunflower Oil — a healthy flower for regenerative farming purposes but not a healthy cooking oil)

  • Local Goat Cheese and Free-Range Organic Eggs

  • Local Coconut, Wood & Woven Products for kids’ learning toys as well as a diverse range of household and self-care items

  • Organic Sisal Mats and other household items that emerge

  • Organic Clothing options (ie. materials like cotton/linen/sisal)

  • Organic Cleaning Products & Detergents for the home & washing

  • Plastic-free Cleaning Products (wood and bristles) for scrubbing

  • Clay Plates, Mugs, Thermoses, Jugs, Pans and Pots of various kinds

  • Local Essential Oils and Dried Herbs made from local gardens

  • Sugar Wax for self-care and Non-Toxic Beeswax Candles for home

  • Various Soaps infused with Local Essential Oils and Dried Herbs

  • NOTE: Ethical beekeeping may be explored in the local mangrove, establishing a reciprocal relationship with the natural environment to protect the mangrove and grow organic mangrove honey, honeycomb & beeswax — while simultaneously promoting the local inhabitation of bees for regenerative farming purposes.

The Umoja Wellness Market is one of a few supportive cornerstones to Umoja Wellness as a part of Umoja Ushongo Ltd. (LLC), complimenting the Umoja Ushongo Hub & Wellness Sanctuary. Here, many products and their production enhance guests’ experiences, environment & resources. From regenerative, non-toxic choices to local, reciprocal workshops, it all ties together.

A brand & community that inspires us within the marketplace is Green Thing Kenya. A product & village that inspires us as an eco-market is Hamamat’s Shea Butter. Both female founders are leading community movements & intentional lifestyles.
